Founded by a small group of Swedish immigrants in 1896, Emanuel Lutheran Church (ELC) was initially located on Ekman Street in Worcester, MA. Thirty-six were present at the organizational meeting, sixteen communicants and twenty children. The cornerstone of the current site located at 200 Greenwood Street was laid on Sunday, September 18, 1898, by Dr. C.F. Johansson, President of the Boston District, assisted by Pastor Frans A. Engstrand.

Becoming known as “A community gathering place,” we are a thriving intergenerational family of believers who love and care for each other. We are proud of our longstanding history and privilege to serve the Worcester Quinsigamond Village community and surrounding towns for 125 years. Emanuel Lutheran Church is a member church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) which is the largest Lutheran denomination in the U.S.
